Para-National Team Members Test Paralympic Venue

Canadian Para-badminton athletes Traveled to Tokyo to compete in the 2019 Japan Para-Badminton International

From November 13th to 17th some of Canada's top Canadian Para-badminton athletes competed at the Yoyogi National Stadium, in Tokyo, Japan - the same venue that will be used for badminton at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games. 5 Canadian athletes from 3 para-badminton classifications were present:

  • Mikhail Bilenki (WH1) - Vancouver, BC
  • Yuka Chokyu (WH1) - Vancouver, BC
  • Pascal Lapointe (SL4) - Montreal, QC
  • Wyatt Lightfoot (SS6) - Regina, SK
  • Olivia Meier (SL4) - Winnipeg, MB

This event is one of fourteen events that provides athletes an opportunity to earn points towards World Rankings, a crucial part in order to qualify for badminton's debut in the Paralympic Games next summer.  The 2019 Japan Para-Badminton International is considered a "test-event", where athletes, coaches, and host committees can get a taste of what is to come.

Late in January, Badminton Manitoba will be hosting the 2020 National Championships where para-badminton will be featured alongside able-bodied badminton for the first time! Para-badminton National Team members and Paralympic hopefuls will be sure to be in attendance. Don't miss your chance to watch para-badminton in action, or try for yourself!
