BWF Competition Offers Great Experiences for Young Competitors
Ottawa, ON (October 7, 2025) – Badminton Canada is excited to announce the team selected to attend the BWF World Junior Team Championships 2025 from October 6 to 11 and the YONEX SUNRISE BWF World Junior Championships 2025 from October 13 to 19 at the National Centre of Excellence (NCE) in Guwahati, India.
Team Canada kicks of the competition in the BWF World Junior Team Championship competing in Group C against Australia, Malaysia, Slovakia. This tough group will challenge the Canadian contingent will be in tough, but the experience will help the athletes in the next competition. This event will debut a new relay format featuring best-of-three sets. A team wins a set by reaching 45 points, with each set comprising five matches - men’s singles, women’s singles, men’s doubles, women’s doubles and mixed doubles. Play will switch to the next match after one team reaches nine points. The previous relay format was a single set to 110 points over 10 matches.
“This new format will test our athlete’s ability to react to the match flow and ensure they stay focused on the task at hand,” shares Team Canada Head Coach Mike Butler, “We believe this team will give the top countries a run for their money!”
Following the BWF World Junior Team Championship the team gets a 1-day break and before jumping into YONEX SUNRISE BWF World Junior Championships. During this event the BWF will implement a trial of the 3×15 scoring system. This initiative is part of a broader testing and analysis program by the BWF to evaluate the impact of this scoring format on match duration, player strategy, and overall competitive intensity.
“With games in the team event being 9 points and 15 points in the individual event, we will need to be aggressive in our play,” Butler shares, “We are confident that the faster match, means there are opportunities for upsets and puts pressure on the top players to be ready. Canadian players have completed a season of top play in our National Junior Circuit and the Pan Am Junior competition. They are ready.”
Players are selected for the team based on their performance over the 2024-25 competition season gaining experience and ranking points. Many of these players will graduate from the Junior competitions and seek to compete in BWF tournaments around the world. This edition of Team Canada draws players from several provinces and the top clubs from across the country. These 16, 17 and 18 year-olds players have shown promise to take that next step into international competition. The 2025 Team Canada is as follows:
