Events

August 4, 2026 – Please note that the updated General Competition Regulations for the 2026-2027 season are now available. We strongly encourage everyone participating in National level events to carefully read and understand the General Competition Regulations prior to the start of the season. All updates in the GCR are highlighted in yellow.

Badminton Canada is committed to pilot the new scoring system of 3x15 while keeping the same match timing and number of entries from July 2026 to December 2026. As of January 2027 the Badminton Canada Competitions Committee will review the average match times and make a decision if the number of entries or a different competition format can be introduced. Badminton Canada is committed to providing a better experience for all athletes by offering shorter competition days, all while still offering high level competition to the athletes. We appreciate the understanding of the badminton community as we test the new scoring system and collect information.   

We would like to highlight the notable changes to the GCR for the upcoming season: 

 

Badminton Canada Scoring 

• Starting September 2026 Badminton Canada will adopt the scoring of best of 3 to 15 for all matches, and all other BWF scoring rules will apply.
• The Canadian Masters Championships will remain with scoring of 3x21 for the 2027 season.
• The Canada Winter Games 2027 will adopt the 3x15 scoring system. 

Updated Maximum Entry & Qualifications 

• Qualification Rounds will be an option for all Junior Elite and Senior Elite events. 
• Scheduling of the main rounds will take precedence over scheduling of any qualification rounds. Qualification rounds will only be conducted for draws with more than the Max Draw Size if time permits within the schedule. 
• Please review the Maximum Draw Size section of the GCR for more information.

Consolations Junior Elite & Championships  

• Consolation draws will NOT be played during any national events including Junior Elite Circuits, Senior Elite Circuits, Junior Super Series and Canadian Championships (excluding Masters Championships).

Senior Circuit 

• No official Senior circuit events will be offered in 2026/2027, however, established events can include an additional OPEN category to their existing Junior Elite/Junior Super Series.

Scorekeeping and Timing 

• All matches must be monitored by a scorekeeper if an umpire or volunteer is not available. Scorekeeping devices must be provided by the Host. Scorecards can be printed directly from Tournament Software. 
  • At the end of a match the non-winner/winner/random selection (host to choose each day) of the match is required to stay on-court to score keep and time the upcoming match on the same court. Scheduling of the tournament will be adjusted to provide additional rest time between matches to accommodate the additional commitment of the players. In the case of doubles, the decision to whom will stay behind to score keep will be decided by Rock-Paper-Scissors between the non-winning pair.  
  • Any player unwilling or unable to cooperate is responsible for finding a replacement and if they do not cooperate without a valid reason approved by the referee, they will be disqualified from the remainder of the tournament.  
  • A volunteer from either the players or the available volunteers will be asked to be the scorekeepers for the first match of the day. 

Medals 

• Junior Elite events: Medals for winners (gold) and finalists (silver) will be awarded. Bronze medals will NOT be awarded.  
• Senior Elite events:  Medals for winners (gold) and finalists (silver) will be awarded.  Bronze medals will NOT be awarded.
• Junior Super Series: Medals for winners (gold) and finalists (silver) will be awarded. Bronze medals will NOT be awarded. 
• Championships: Medals for all winners, finalists and semi-finalists will be awarded at National Championship events. 

Canadian Masters Championships 

• Maximum Event Entry:  
  • Players 30-34 may enter a maximum of 3 events 
  • If the registration cap is set to less than 350 players, all players 35+ and over would have a maximum of 3 events. 
  • If the registration cap is set to more than 350 players, all players 35+ and over would have a maximum of 4 events.
