General Competition Regulations Memo & Town Hall

Updated General Competition Regulations for the 2025-2026 season are now available.

August 7, 2025 – Please note that the updated General Competition Regulations for the 2025-2026 season are now available. We strongly encourage everyone participating in National level events to carefully read and understand the General Competition Regulations prior to the start of the season. All updates in the GCR are highlighted in yellow and will remain this way during publication to help participants identify changes to the GCR.

We would like to highlight the notable changes to the GCR for the upcoming season:

Default & Failure to Complete Match Policy

  • If the player withdraws after the draws have been posted or fails to appear for his/her scheduled match the Rules of Badminton pertaining to withdrawals applies (section 14.1.4 of BWF General Competition Regulations

    • Should a Player be entered in more than one Event, by retiring or withdrawing from that one Event, the Player must be withdrawn from all other Events in which the Player is entered. NO EXCEPTIONS will be made for this rule due to injury or ilness.

    • For doubles, if one player in the pair withdraws, his or her partner will not be penalized.

Scorekeeping and Timing

  • All matches must be monitored by a scorekeeper if an umpire is not available. Scorekeeping and timing devices must be provided by the Host. Scorecards can be printed directly from Tournament Software.

    • At the end of a match the non-winner of the match is required to stay on-court to score keep and time the upcoming match on the same court. Scheduling of the tournament will be adjusted to provide additional rest time between matches to accommodate the additional commitment of the players. In the case of doubles, the decision to whom will stay behind to score keep will be decided by Rock-Paper-Scissors between the non-winning pair. Any player unwilling or unable to cooperate is responsible for finding a replacement.

Maximum Draw Sizes

  • All genders will have equal draw sizes during registration. After registration closes, any available draw spaces will be reallocated for the Junior and Senior Elite events.

Registration Requirements

  • All players must be part of an affiliated club (or Provincial Zone) in good standing with their provincial organzation to be eligible to participate in national level tournaments.

  • Players may enter a maximum of 3 events for all national tournaments, including if tournaments are offered simultaneously (ex. Junior Elite and Open tournaments happening on the same weekend, players can only enter a maximum of 3 events between the two tournaments).

Promotions and Substitutions

  • Promotions and substitutions for all Badminton Canada sanctioned events will follow BWF Section 5.2.3 - Junior Tournament Regulations, specifically sections 5, 6 and 7.

  • Players registered on the reserve list for an event but included in the main draw for other events will be automatically accepted for promotion or substitution without requiring confirmation. However, communication will be made with the promoted or substituted participants. If a player is on the reserve list for ALL events, confirmation will be required to accept the promotion or substitution.

  • If merit-based entry is used, partnerships are final once the participant main-draw list has been published. Please refer to the Promotions and Substitutions section of the GCR for more details regarding promotion and substitution priorities.
