Recap: TotalEnergies BWF World Championships 2023

The TotalEnergies BWF World Championships 2023 featured some of the most exceptional performances from the world's top badminton athletes.

Eleven of Canada’s top badminton players made their way to Copenhagen, Denmark to represent their country at the TotalEnergies BWF World Championships 2023 from August 21 to 27.

With Canadian athletes competing in all categories, Canada received great coverage on the world stage for the 28th edition of the World Championships. One standout player was Ty Lindeman, who had an impressive showing in the round of 64 with two wins. The first win came with Men’s Doubles partner Kevin Lee followed the next day with a win in Mixed Doubles with partner Josephine Wu. Both pairs performed well against some very tough teams and ended up finishing top 32 in Men’s doubles and Mixed Doubles. Brian Yang also had a strong performance, making it to the round of 32 where he was defeated by Lee Zii Jia (MAS) 21-11, 21-16. Badminton Canada congratulates all athletes who put in their best efforts and represented their country at the event and thanks to coaches Mike Butler and Mario Santoso for their continued support of the athletes.

Unfortunately, the competition saw three Canadian athletes injured, but they are presently recuperating and are determined to come back stronger for the next event.

“This was a tough week on the injury front. It was the first time in my coaching career that I had two athletes in a 24-hour span have to use a wheelchair to get to the treatment area.” said coach Mike Butler. “We are very proud of our team on several levels. Their perseverance through adversity, as well as the fact that we had eleven athletes qualify for Worlds.”

Overall, the event was a fantastic showcase of the remarkable skill and unwavering dedication of the world's best badminton players.
