The atmosphere was electric at the Chi-Wan Young Sports Centre in Charlottetown, PEI for day three of badminton at the Canada Winter Games. The packed crowd was treated to a day of gold and bronze medal matches in MS,WS,MD, WD and XD after two days of preliminary play.

Team NS Makes History

Ritu Shah and Thomas Ashton of Nova Scotia both fought to silver medals in their respective singles events - Nova Scotia’s first Canada Games badminton medals in over two decades.

“Its been extremely fun. I’m happy that we could reach the finals and medal for Nova Scotia." said Ashton, who fought his way to a close defeat  (21-11, 20-22 ,21-19)  to Timothy lock of Ontario in the gold medal match. “We’re not thought of as medal favourites at nationals competitions. It’s great for the province to show that we can produce good players and results.”

Ashton and Shah will now refocus their efforts on the team event, which runs March 3-5. Fresh off his success in the singles event, Ashton sees plenty of potential in his team's chances. “I think we have a really good team, all of our players have had good wins this week… We have a really good shot and I’m just excited to see how far we can go."

Hoang, Lock Strike Gold Twice

Chloe Hoang and Timothy Lock of Ontario both had days to remember, winning their respective singles finals before teaming up for their mixed doubles final win over Colin Jia and Sharon Au, also of Ontario (21-19, 21-17).

Team Ontario claimed gold in all five events on the day, leaving Huang and Lock both grateful for the support of their teammates and enthusiastic about the upcoming team event.

"We’re feeling really good, really happy." said Haung. "We’re really excited for the team event."

"We want to thank our teammates for supporting us." said Lock.
