2022 BWF Thomas & Uber Cup Finals Recap

Team Canada competed in the 2022 BWF Thomas & Uber Cup Finals in Bangkok, Thailand.

This week, 17 Team Canada athletes, 8 men and 9 women, competed against the best badminton countries in the world at the 2022 BWF Thomas & Uber Cup Finals in Bangkok, Thailand from May 8-15, 2022.

Thomas Cup:

Team Canada was placed in Group C and faced Team China, India and Germany in the group stage of the tournament. On Sunday, our Canadians were defeated by China, 5-0, and again on Monday against Team India. However, on Wednesday our Canadians put up a good fight and were able to win two matches against Germany in a 3-2 loss. Canada's two wins came following the victory of Brian Yang in singles (21-16,13-21,14-21), and the win of B.R. Sankeerth and Kevin Lee in doubles (21-19, 18 -21, 16-21).

Uber Cup:

Team Canada was placed in Group D with India, South Korea and the United States. On Sunday, the Canadians were defeated 4-1 against the Team India despite some close matches and great performances by our Canadian Women. Rachel Honderich and Kristen Tsai won a match against their Indian opponent Shruti Mishra and Simran Singhi (19-21,12-21). Tuesday, against the South Koreans, Team Canada lost 4-1. Although Canada's Wen Yu Zhang delivered a strong performance and won her match against world No.19 Kim Gaeun (17-21, 21-14, 20-22). On Wednesday, the Canadians took on Team USA to get revenge for their defeat at the Pan America M&F Cup. They won the series 3-2 with a few close matches. Rachel Honderich and Kristen Tsai won against Francesca Corbette and Allison Lee (16-21, 21-17, 21-16). Crystal Lai and Josephine Wu also won against Kodi Tang Lee and Sanchita Pandey (22-20, 21-11). Finally, Rachel Chan was able to secure the victor for Team Canada, winning her match against Natalie Chi (21-17, 21-18).
