COVID-19 Update: National Events

Badminton Canada has updated the status of national events hosted in Canada

Over the last week, there has been a spate of announcements limiting amateur sport activities in many provinces due to the increased prevalence of the Omicron variant of COVID-19. Each province and territory has implemented slightly different policies around the hosting of sporting events, and activities that can occur in clubs and tournament venues. As a result of these changes, Badminton Canada has decided to postpone a number of events, including;

  • 2022 YONEX Western Senior Elite - Calgary, Alberta from January 7-9, 2022
  • 2022 YONEX Quebec Junior Elite - Gatineau, Quebec from January 14-16, 2022
  • 2022 YONEX Senior & Para National Championships - Winnipeg, Manitoba from February 2-5, 2022
  • 2022 YONEX Onatrio Junior Elite - Markham, Ontario from February 11-13, 2022

Badminton Canada will be contacting all players registered in these events to officially inform them of the postponement, and to expect full refunds to their registration fees in the coming week. All events are currently being evaluated for new dates to be hosted in the late winter or early spring.

"Badminton Canada understands that event postponments can be frustrating for our community" said Executive Director, Joe Morissette. "We are working closely with all of our provincial sport organizations and host committees to find ways to host our events safely this winter and spring. The Omnicron variant has halted our plans for a robust tournament season, however Badminton Canada remains committed to hosting these events when our provinical governments deem it to be safe."

Badminton Canada will also be closely monitoring the 2022 YONEX Ontario Junior Elite hosted in Markham, Ontario from February 11-13, 2022. Badminton Canada and Badminton Ontario will meet again the first week of January 2022 to evaluate the provinical health and safety measures, and determine the feasibility of hosting the event as planned.
