Canada Competes at the 2020 BWF Thomas & Uber Cup Finals!

After being postponed for several months, Canada takes the court at the 2020 Thomas & Uber Cup Finals!

Ottawa, ON – Team Canada is set to compete in the 2020 BWF Thomas & Uber Cup Finals in Aarhus, Denmark from October 9-17, 2021. 

The last edition of the BWF Thomas & Uber Cup Finals was back in 2018 in Bangkok, Thailand where Team Canada reached the quarter-finals of the Uber Cup. Once again, Canada has emerged as the top country from the Pan Am region and will look to take some of the top couintires in the world. Qualification came back in February 2020 where Canada secured a place in the Team Finals by once again winning the M&F Pan American Team Qualifications.

“We are very pleased to have a strong team here at the Thomas & Uber Cup Finals" said National Team Head Coach, Mike Butler. "Canada will look to build on our success from the 2018 tournament, where our women all had world class performances. This year, we have a few promising young players joining our several Olympians."

With 14 athletes, 6 Male and 8 Female, attending the Thomas and Uber Cup Finals, Team Canada is poised to compete and show that they belong amongst the top badminton countries in the world! The athletes attending the Thomas and Uber Cup Finals are:

  • Catherine Choi (Ontario)
  • Rachel Honderich (Ontario)
  • Crystal Lai (Ontario)
  • Michelle Li (Ontario)
  • Talia Ng (Ontario)
  • Kristen Tsai (British Columbia)
  • Wendy Zhang (British Columbia)

“The Thomas/Uber Cup Finals are two of the premier events on the BWF calendar, and for both Canadian teams to qualify is a great accomplishment! Top badminton nations set these events as primary objectives, so we are in tough for both men's and women's events; to get out of our pool in either Thomas or Uber would mean incredible performanes by our Teams” said Exectutive Director, Joe Morissette.

“This is also a great gauge for our athletes looking ahead to Commonwealth Games in 2022; watching and competing against the world's best” he continued, “I am looking forward to the challenge and excitement ahead, and very pleased to have both Canadian teams representing the Pan American region”

Team Canada's Thomas Cup team is placed in Group D, and will take on England, Japan, and Malaysia; the Uber Cup team will also be in Group D with China, Denmark and Malaysia.
