Return to Play:

We understand that the greater badminton community is anxious to return to their clubs and competitions, but we must do so safely. Badminton Canada and provincial badminton associations are working closely with clubs across the country on return to play protocols to help ensure a safe environment for all. As this information develops, BCAN will be sharing our resources with the provincial/territorial badminton associations and clubs across the country.

The health, safety and wellbeing of all players, coaches, parents, event staff and volunteers remains our top priority. Badminton Canada will not resume competition unless it is absolutely clear that is safe to do so. Events will look different next season as new health and safety measures as well as new regulations will be implemented at clubs and at our competitions to ensure participant safety. These will include strategies to reduce the potential transmission of COVID 19. For example, we will implement strategies to reduce foot traffic in the venues, implement daily participant health attestations, make changes in sportsmanship and fair play practices, etc. Our committees are working hard to find ways to return to play safely. Stay tuned on more information on the health and safety protocols for our events next season.

National Ranking Updates:

The next Junior and Senior National Ranking update will be on July 1st, 2020. This ranking update will include all events played between July 2019 and June 2020 (as identified by BCAN General Competitions Regulations). As there are no BCAN recognized events being played between now and September 2020, regular ranking updates will resume at the beginning of the 2020-21 season.

JNDT Qualifier & Age Group National Championships:

Due to the cancelation of the 2020 YONEX U23 & Junior National Championship, Badminton Canada will be hosting sperate Age Group National Championships (U15, U17, U19, U23) throughout the fall of 2020. Rather than all junior age groups to be played in a singular week-long event, each age group will be played over the course of a weekend in a similar format to our YONEX Elite Series events.

Players will be eligible to compete in the respective Age Group Championship (AGC) as defined by the 2019-2020 eligibility criteria. For example, athletes that are in their first year in the U19 age group for the 2020-21 season, may be eligible to compete in the U17 event. However, players will only be allowed to play one age group per discipline (U15BS, U17XD, U19BD) for a max of 3 events.

It is important to note these 2020 Age Group National Championships will not be included in the selection criteria for the 2020-21 YONEX Junior National Team (U15, U17, U19). The 2020-21 YONEX Junior National Team will be selected this June in keeping with the timelines and selection process outlined in the JNT Selection Criteria.

In addition, Badminton Canada has rescheduled the 2020 JNDT Qualifier for September 25-27, 2020 at Prairie Badminton in Winnipeg, MB alongside the 2020 YONEX Prairie Junior Elite. As this is a direct qualifying event, the YONEX JNDT will be determined on the results of this tournament.

2021 Canadian Masters National Championships:

The 2020 YONEX Canadian Masters Championships have been canceled along with all other National Championships and international events scheduled for the spring and summer of 2020.

Looking ahead to next year, it is still uncertain if some players in the Masters community (the most at-risk age groups) will be able to safely return to competition. Badminton Canada wants to respect the prestige, history and tradition that the Masters Championships represent; therefore the 2021 edition of the Canadian Masters Championships set to be in Prince George, BC has been canceled.

Badminton Canada and the Canadian Masters Badminton Association still want to service our badminton community, and will work closely together in potentially hosting a recognized national Masters tournament with adapted regulations, age eligibility, and requirements in lieu of the Masters Championships. More information to follow.

University & College National Championships:

The 2020 YONEX University & College National Championships were scheduled to be played in March of 2020, but was forced to be rescheduled due to COVID-19. The individual event was set to be a direct qualifier for the 2020 World University Championships in November, is now being played alongside the YONEX Quebec Elite from September 18-20, 2020 at l’Universite Laval. Please note that due to University team rosters changing with the start of the new semester, the Team Event of the 2020 National Championships will not be played.

The regular format of the University & College Championships will return in March, 2021. Universite Laval is passing the torch after hosting the Championships for many years, and Ontario Tech University has been named our new hosts! Badminton Canada is thrilled to be competing in Ontario Tech’s new badminton facilities, and will certainly be a fantastic event!

National Championships & International Challenge:

Badminton Canada is celebrating 100 years of badminton in Canada this February! In honor of this milestone, BCAN will be hosting both the 2021 Canadian National Championships and 2021 Canadian International Challenge back to back weeks from February 4th – 7th and 10th - 14th, 2021 respectively.

After the cancelation of the 2020 edition of the Canadian International Challenge, badminton is returning to Fort McMurray, AB in full force! With world class facilities, large competition venues and practice courts, along with a community that is excited to experience high level badminton – the event is ready to celebrate BCAN’s 100th anniversary!

2020 Canada Open & Para-international:

Due to COVID-19, many domestic and international events hosted in Canada were forced to be postponed or canceled. This includes the 2020 edition of the YONEX Canada Open hosted in Calgary, AB and the 2020 YONEX Para-badminton International hosted in Ottawa, ON.

Over the past months, the BWF, Badminton Canada, Badminton Alberta, and respective municipal partners have worked together to potentially reschedule these events for the fall of 2020. However due to the uncertainty around the ability for international players to travel to Canada in Fall 2020 and a very congested BWF schedule, both events are cancelled. BCAN, along with its partners, have collectively decided to focus their efforts and resources to executing great editions of the Canada Open and Canadian Para International in 2021.
