Team Canada brings home gold in the 2020 Pan Am Team Event in Salvador, Brazil
Canada’s Men & Women's Teams won the Badminton Pan Am M&F Cup 2020, and will represent the Pan Am region at the Thomas & Uber Cup Finals 2020, next May, in Denmark!
The final day of the Badminton Pan Am Male & Female Cup 2020 had exciting matches during the finals, that took place in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil, from February 13 to 17.
Canada managed to defend their crown in both team events after great victories in the finals.
The Women's Team defeated USA by 3-0 after vitories of Michelle Li, Catherine Choi/Wendy Zhang and Brittney Tam. Li started the way to the cup after defeating Natalie Chi (21-12, 21-6). The duo Choi/Zhang did the same against Kuei-Ya Chen/Chinue De La Merced (21-15, 22-20) and Tam sealed the victory against Esther Shi (21-11, 21-16), giving to Canada the Female Cup and the qualification to the Uber Cup Finals 2020.
Also, Male team reached a victory after defeating surprising Mexico’s Team by 3-1. This tie began with a victory of Jason Ho-Shue against Mexico star Lino Muñoz (21-7, 22-20). Brian Yang added the second point for Canada after defeating Job Castillo (21-14, 21-19) but, in the third match, Mexico added a important point due to the victory of Luis Montoya against Antonio Li (21-16, 19-21, 21-17). Joshua Hurlburt-Yu and Brian Yang sentenced the tie after a tough match against Muñoz/Castillo (22-20, 21-16), securing the qualification to the Thomas Cup Finals 2020.
The Winners Ceremony was led by Mr. Anil Kaul, Deputy President of Badminton Pan Am Confederation, who gave special recognition to Brazil Badminton Federation, represented by Mr. Francisco Ferraz, for being the host of this Championship. Also, the Badminton Pan Am Confederation recognized the performance of the referees Ms. Dania Ramos and Mrs. Shirly Gabay and the Umpire Assessor Mr. Mike Walker, during this tournament.
