Michelle Li Defends her Title at the Macau Open 2019

Michelle Li wins second Women's Singles title at the Macau Open

From October 30th to November 3rd the Macau Open took place in Macau, China. The Macau Open is a BWF World Tour Super 300 level tournament, featuring some of the top badminton players in the world! With plenty of Olympic qualifying points up for grabs, competition was sure to be fierce!

After conquering the field at the 2018 edition of the Macau Open, Michelle was back again this year looking to repeat as Women's Singles Champion! Michelle entered the tournament as the highest ranked player, earning the 1st seed. In her first match of the tournament Michelle was drawn against Korea’s Hyo Min Kim. Michelle won handily (21-13, 21-19) to advance to the next round.

Next up was Hong Kong’s Yuet Yee Leung, who was the only player who managed to win a game off Michelle. The game lasted nearly an hour as Leung pushed the second game to an exciting 28-30 win. However, Michelle was able to regain control and take the third game, securing the win (21-17, 28-30, 21-12).

Michelle’s next 3 matches all featured seeded opponents, none of whom were able to win a single game. 6th seed Yan Yan Cai of China stood her ground in the quarter finals but ultimately fell in 2 games (21-14, 21-18). Waiting for Michelle in the Semi-Finals was 8th seeded Korean Ga Eun Kim, who was also unable to take a game, losing 2 straight (21-9, 21-19).

After progressing to the Finals Michelle faced her highest ranked competition of the tournament, China’s Yue Han who entered as the 3rd seed. The first game was close as Michelle managed a narrow 21-18 victory. The next game however Michelle proved too much to handle as she dominated the game 21-8 to win her second Macau Open Women's Singles title!
