Recap of Inaugural Yonex Canadian Para-badminton International 2019

From May 7 to May 12 2019, over 30 countries participated in the first ever Canadian Para-badminton International Event in Ottawa, Ontario. 

From May 7 to May 12, 2019, over 30 countries participated in the inaugural Yonex Canadian Para-badminton International Event in Ottawa, Ontario. The event had a total of 195 players with 359 entries in 22 different events. Each athlete had the chance to participate in round-robin games on the first couple days of competition followed by elimination rounds and finals.

The athletes had six days of intense competition in the Montpetit Gym at the University of Ottawa. Our Canadian athletes represented their country well in this first ever Canadian Para-badminton International Event with 3 athletes making it to the quarterfinals.

 

Bernard Lapointe (Men’s Singles WH2) won his first round of elimination 21-13, 21-7 against Chilean player Jaime Aranguiz Urrutia. Lapointe was later defeated in the quarterfinals by the eventual winner Ho Yuen Chan (21-6, 21-5). Our only Canadian women’s singles SL4 player Olivia Meier played in the quarterfinals but unfortunately lost 21-15, 21-9 against Khalimatus Sadiyah from Indonesia. In the women’s doubles WH1-WH2, Canadian Yuka Chokyu with her partner Pilar Jauregui Cancino from Peru played in an exciting quarterfinal against a Belgium and Turkey duo, but in the end lost 21-11, 21-17.
