Host Province Alberta captures gold in the Team Event at the Canada Winter Games in Red Deer!

From February 25th to March 2nd 2019, badminton was hosted at the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre for the 2019 Canada Winter Games in Red Deer, Alberta. With athletes representing all 13 provinices and territories, the stage was set for an exciting week of badminton! 

Starting off the week was the Individual event; where the best players from each province competed to be Canada Games Champions! The provinces coming through into the final day of competition were Alberta, British Columbia, Ontario and Quebec; all fighting for a spot atop of the podium. Alberta would finish the Individual event with the highest medal count (7 medals; 2 gold), with Ontario and Quebec tying for second with 5 medals. British Columbia would finish with 3 medals - all gold for winning 3 out 5 events!

Heading into the final day of the Team Event was once again Alberta, British Columbia, Ontario and Quebec - all fighting to be the best badminton province in Canada. The Bronze medal match featured British Columbia vs. Ontario, and Alberta vs. Quebec in the Team Final. With both ties going 5 matches, it would be Team Alberta that would claim the gold, Quebec with the silver, and Ontario with the bronze to close out the Games!

Wendy Zhang, who won two gold medals for British Columbia, was selected as a flag bearer for the closing ceremonies.

"It is a huge honour to not only represent BC at the Canada Winter Games but to also be the flag bearer," said the Grade 11 Richmond High student who plays out of the Clear One Badminton Centre in her hometown. "It is very special to me and I am extremely thankful for this opportunity to show my BC pride at my very first multi-sport event.”
