Canadian athletes are ready for the Santiago 2023 Pan Am Games

The Santiago 2023 Pan American Games are just around the corner and Team Canada Badminton athletes are excited and ready to represent their country.

For the first time in history, Chile will be hosting the Pan Am Games in Santiago. The Pan Am Games is the largest multi-sport event in the Americas and is hosted every four years where the best athletes in the continent compete for the podium. The Games will start October 20 and run until November 5. Badminton will take place October 21 to October 25 (Days 1 to 5) at the Centro de Entrenamiento Olímpico.

The number 1 seed in the competition, Brian Yang, will be starting off the tournament with a bye into the second round in Men’s Singles where he will face his first opponent of the competition in the round of 16. Brian is coming back for the gold this year after getting a silver medal at the Lima 2019 Pan Am Games.

With top Canadian player Michelle Li out with an injury, Wendy Zhang has the opportunity to take over the Women’s Singles competition. Wendy, who is seeded second, will start the tournament with a bye into the round of 32 where she will face Nairoby Abigail Jimenez (DOM). Accompanying Wendy in the Women’s Single competition are Rachel Chan [3/4] and Eliana Zhang who will both also be starting with a bye into the second round.

In the Men’s Double competition, Canada occupies the top 2 seeded entries with partners Kevin Lee and Ty Lindeman taking the first seed and partners Adam Dong and Nyl Yakura taking the second seed. Both pairs will start the tournament with a bye directly into the Quarter Finals. From there, they will fight their way to the finals for a chance to give Canada a head-to-head final you won’t want to miss.

The Women’s Double event brings a little more excitement right from the start of the competition for Canada with top seeds Catherine Choi and Josephine Wu matching up against Adriana Barrios Chiong and Mariana Palacios Castillo of Guatemala. Canadian pair Wendy Zhang and Eliana Zhang will be competing against the pair from the Dominican Republic in their first match in the Women’s Double event.

Finally, in the Mixed Doubles event, Ty Lindeman and Josephine Wu will be representing Canada in a big way, starting as a second seed in the tournament and Team USA taking the first seed. Both pairs will fight their way starting at opposite ends of the bracket. The Canadian pair will start their journey in Round 2 of the tournament against Mexico or Columbia.

Canada currently holds the record for the most Pan American Games medals won in badminton, including a total of 21 gold medals and hopes to increase that total at these Games.
