The 2023 YONEX Canadian International Challenge is ready to get started!

The 2023 YONEX Canadian international is just around the corner and the City of Markham is already buzzing with excitement.

The Markham Pan Am Centre will welcome 180 athletes from around the world competing in singles and doubles badminton competitions. Athletes will be competing for points to qualify for the 2024 Olympic Games. Each match provides points to its players with the more points awarded the further into the competition you advance.

Canada will be well represented at the event with 94 athletes competing. In addition, Canada occupies the top seed in every event, giving us the chance to bring home a medal in every event.

The number 1 seed in the Men’s Singles event is Brian Yang. Brian will be starting his tournament following the Qualification round where he will take on the 12th qualified athlete.

With top Canadian player and hometown favorite Michelle Li out with an injury, Wendy Zhang has the opportunity to take over the Women’s Singles competition. Wendy, who is seeded first, will start the tournament with a bye into the round of 32 where she will face Nattcha Chatputtarin (THA). Accompanying Wendy in the Women’s Single competition is Rachel Chan [3/4] who will also be starting with a bye into the second round where she will face Nepal’s Amita Giri.

In the Men’s Double competition, Canada occupies the top 2 seeded entries with partners Adam Dong and Nyl Yakura taking the first seed and partners Kevin Lee and Ty Lindeman taking the second seed. Both pairs will start the tournament playing another Canadian pair.

The Women’s Double event will start with top seeded duo Catherine Choi and Josephine Wu getting a bye into the second round where they will match up against Canadian pair Emma Meng and Nong Sophia. Catherine and Josephine are coming off a spectacular gold medal at the Pan Am Games 2023 and are in search of another win.

Finally, in the Mixed Doubles event, Ty Lindeman and Josephine Wu will be representing Canada in a big way, starting as the first seed in the tournament. The Canadian pair will start their journey in Round 1 of the elimination round of 32 against the USA.

Badminton Canada, in partnership with Badminton Ontario, is excited to once again welcome badminton players from around the world to the 2023 YONEX Canadian International Challenge. Make sure to get your tickets now to be a part of this amazing event!!
