John Cowan

Treasurer

Raised in Vancouver
Graduated from UBC with BA and Sauder School of Business with a diploma in Sales and Marketing Management.
Twenty-two years in the wood products industry. Senior management positions included GM Marketing and New Product Development, GM Offshore Sales, GM North American Retail Sales and GM Plywood Sales. Was member of BC Premier’s Roundtable on Forestry in 2008/2009. The Roundtable advised government on hosting conditions for the industry over a ten year horizon. He served as board member and marketing committee chair at the Canadian Plywood Association.
Presently owner of Decourcy Management Inc, which specializes in land development in central B.C. Decourcy has also provided strategic and operational advice to forestry clients in Canada and Russia.
Serving his third year as Board member of Vancouver Lawn Tennis and Badminton Club. Served two years as Badminton Chair, and is presently Food and Beverage Chair.
Father of sons Christopher and William. Both have achieved National & Provincial level rankings in dinghy sailing, the former as a coach, and the latter as a competitor.
Married to Judith and enjoying increasing amounts of travel

 

 

 

Martin Tam

Vice President

Born in Montreal and moved to Toronto in 1993.  

Spent 15 years in one of Canada's largest financial institution before
leaving and setting up his own financial brokerage licensed with the Ontario
Securities Commission and member of the MFDA.

Graduate of Concordia University with a economics degree.

Martin enjoyed training kids in basketball before deciding to watch his kids
decide on playing badminton competitively.

Better known in the badminton world as Brittney Tam's dad or Carter's dad.
Martin brings an entrepreneurial spirit and background.  He's been in the
badminton scene in Markham since 2002 and has seen the explosion of clubs in
this area.

 

 

John Butler

Secretary

 

John is a lawyer by training and had a 38 year career in law and business in Toronto, working for Torys LLP, Barrick Gold Corporation and CPP Investment Board, before retiring in December, 2014.  His family has been involved in badminton through four generations, with his grandfather, Leigh Elkington Butler, having been a founder in the early 1930's of the Union Club in Waterloo (one of the first badminton clubs in Canada); hIs father, Howard, having been a winner of multiple titles, including the U.S. Open Masters singles title; and his son, Peter, having been a nationally ranked junior and university competitor.

Ashley Sceviour

Born and raised in Calgary, AB.

Graduated from University of Calgary in Engineering. Graduated from Bond University in law. Worked in both the engineering and legal fields (both private practice and in-house) before moving into the family business.

Has extensive experience in event and organizational project management. Ashley loves to travel and spend time in the mountains.

Ashley's family has been involved in badminton for many years, with her Dad a past board member of Badminton Alberta and her Mom a National Referee. Ashley competed in her "younger years" but continues to plays recreational badminton.
