Recap: 2022 Yonex Canada Open

54 Canadian athletes competed at the 2022 Yonex Canada Open from September 27 to October 2, 2022, in Calgary, Alberta.

After the last two editions were cancelled in 2020 & 2021, the 2022 Yonex Canada Open was again held in Calgary, Alberta at the Markin MacPhail Centre in the WinSport Arena.

Notable performances included highlights in the Women’s Singles event, featuring three-time World Champion and 2016 Olympic Champion, Carolina Marin (ESP). The bottom half of the draw, featured three-time Canadian Olympian and three-time Canada Open Champion, Michelle Li. In the Semi-Finals, Marin would fall short in a long 3-game match to Sung Shou Yun (TPE) 19-21 in the third. After being down six points in the Women’s Singles Semi-Final, Michelle Li pulled off an impressive comeback against her opponent Saena Kawakami (JPN) in extra points (21-16, 16-21, 21-23) in a gruelling and thrilling 3-game match. Li would then go on to win the Women’s Singles Final (21-16, 21-15), making this her fourth title at the Yonex Canada Open.

Team Canada had great success during this tournament in several categories with several Quarter-Final and Semi-Final appearances. The Semi-Finals featured many Canadians including Mixed Doubles partners, Nyl Yakura and Crystal Lai against Japan, falling short (21-11, 21-15). Similarly, it would be an impressive Semi-Final finish for Kevin Lee and Jacqueline Cheung against Chinese Taipei after a well-fought 3-set match (21-18,14-21,15-21. Fellow teammates Rachel Honderich and Kristen Tsai would also end with a disappointing Semi-Final finish against a talented Japan team (17-21, 10-21) in Women’s Doubles.

“We are very proud of our athletes and their performances throughout this tournament,” said Mike Luck, High-Performance Manager. “There were some very impressive results from our Senior and Next Gen Team athletes, and of course, congratulations to our veteran Michelle Li for winning another title here in Calgary”

“Special thank you to Badminton Alberta, Yonex Canada, Sport Canada, Tourism Alberta and our partners, sponsors and volunteers who helped execute another outstanding event,” said Executive Director of Badminton Canada, Jordan Bridal. “We are excited to return to Calgary in July 2023, now with the Canada Open being a BWF Super 500 level event.”
