Canadian Athletes Return to International Competition

International badminton returns as athletes head to the DANISA Denmark Open 2020

5 Canadian athletes are in Odense, Denmark this week for the DANISA Denmark Open 2020, played from October 13-18. Athletes in attendance include; Michelle Li (WS), Jason Ho-Shue (MS/MD), Nyl Yakura (MD), Brian Yang (MS) and BR Sankeerth (MS), lead by National Team Head Coach, Mike Butler.

With many postponements and cancelations over the past months, this event marks the first international competition sanctioned by the BWF since March 2020. The event will test the health and safety protocols put in place by both the BWF and host country, in hopes that Olympic Qualification can resume as scheduled in January 2021.

“Our athletes have been patiently waiting for their return to international competition” said National Team Head Coach, Mike Butler. “For many months the focus has been on maintaining strength and conditioning, with special attention to rehabilitation for some. Being able to get the rust off and get back to competition will benefit our athletes greatly in the coming months when we hope to resume Olympic qualification.”

Following the DANISA Denmark Open, Brian Yang and BR Sankeerth will go onto play the SaarLorLux Open 2020 in Saarbrucken, Germany in the following weeks, October 28 – November 1, with the remaining athletes returning home after the tournament.
