Badminton Canada: COVID-19 Update

Update on events from March until July 2020

 

As the health and safety measures related to COVID-19 continue to progress, Badminton Canada and their stakeholders continue to work closely with respective government and health partners to monitor the situation as it evolves. Badminton Canada would like to update the greater badminton community at this time on the status of domestic and international events hosted in Canada.

 

Events:

 

Due to the uncertainty of when sporting events and large gatherings of people will resume, the status of the following list of Championship and International events is the following:

 

  1. 2020 Canadian Masters Championship (Prince George, BC) - Canceled
    1. The Championship will return to Prince George, BC in April2021
    2. The 2022 Championship will be held in Calgary AB

 

  1. 2020 U23 & Junior National Championship (Moncton, NB) – Canceled
    1. The 2021 Championship will be held in Burlington, ON
    2. The Championship will return to Moncton, NB in 2022

 

  1. 2020 U11 & U13 Junior National Development Team Qualifier (Moncton, NB) - Canceled
    1. The 2021 qualifier will be held in Burlingto,n ON
    2. The qualifier will return to Moncton NB in 2022

 

  1. 2020 Canadian International Challenge (Fort McMurray, AB) – Postponed
    1. The new date of the International Challenge is still to be determined
    2. The BWF has currently suspended all international competition until April 12, 2020

 

  1. 2020 Para-International (Ottawa, ON) – Postponed
    1. The new date of the Para-International is still to be determined

 

  1. 2020 Canada Open (Calgary, AB) – Continues as scheduled
    1. The Open will remain as scheduled, updates to follow in the coming weeks

 

  1. Badminton Canada Sport Congress & Annual General Meeting (Calgary, AB) – Postponed 
    1. The Sport Congress & AGM will be held online, dates TBD

 

Badminton Canada will provide additional information regarding refunds of entry fees directly to those individuals registered to the above listed events. Badminton Canada will also release a statement in the near future regarding how Junior National and Junior Development Team selections will occur.

 

“Badminton Canada has been monitoring the status of COVID-19 for many months with our government and health partners” said Executive Director, Joe Morissette. “The health and safety of the athletes, coaches, volunteers, delegates, and the greater badminton community are our top priority. Due to the escalading situation related to COVID-19, we must make the tough decision to postpone and cancel some events at this time. For those that remain as scheduled, we will we continue to monitor the situation and update our communities accordingly.”
