Canadian World Junior Badminton Team 19th at Suhandinata Cup, set for Eye-Level Cup next week

OTTAWA (April 13, 2014) – Canada posted a clean sweep over Team USA to

clinch 19th place at the Suhandinata Cup, the World Junior Badminton

Championship, in Alor Setar, Malaysia. Canada won the tie 3-0, taking all

three matches in straight sets.

Ty Lindeman and Takeisha Wang, both of Edmonton, opened the tie with a 21-12,

21-14 win in Mixed Doubles while Jason Ho-Shue of Markham, Ont., swept

Timothy Lam 21-16, 22-20 and Brittany Tam, also of Markham, closed out the

match with a 21-14, 21-17 win over Kerry Xu.

The win gave Canada a 3-3 overall record at the weeklong event.

“I was very pleased and proud of our team, their never-give-up attitude and

their willingness to compete hard in every match,” said Michael Butler, Head

Coach of Team Canada. “I’m looking forward to the next chapter, the

individual event.”

Canada posted a 1-2 record in the group stage. They opened with a

hard-fought 3-2 loss to Germany, with Ho-Shue winning both of his matches

and the final match, women’s doubles, came down to a deciding third set.

Canada fell 5-0 to top-seeded Indonesia, the eventual silver medallists, but

rebounded to defeat Sri Lanka 3-2, with Wang and her partner, Joanne Chen of

Markham, clinching the match with an exciting women’s doubles win.

Canada defeated Bulgaria 3-1 in their first playoff match on Wednesday to

advance to the 17th-20th placing round. Lindeman won both of his matches

against the Bulgarians, pairing with Austin Bauer of Calgary in men’s

doubles and Wang in mixed doubles. Ho-Shue picked up a win in men’s singles

to clinch the win.

In the placing round, Canada fell 3-1 to the Netherlands on Thursday,

setting up the match against the Americans later in the day.

Overall, Ho-Shue led Canada with five wins, while Brittney Tam of Markham,

Lindeman and Wang each won three. Bauer, Chen and Jonathan Lai of Toronto

each posted one victory.

The next event for Team Canada is the Eye-Level Cup, the individual events,

which will run from April 13-18 in Alor Setar.
