Badminton Canada Congratulates Marty Deacon on Senate Appointment

Appointment of longstanding sport leader Martha (“Marty”) Deacon to the Senate of Canada

February 20, 2018 – Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced recently the appointment of longstanding sport leader Martha (“Marty”) Deacon to the Senate of Canada on Thursday, February 15th. The appointment is an outstanding acknowledgment of Marty’s leadership and service in the sport and educational sectors, from the local to the national and international.

Marty’s impressive resume reflects a deeply-rooted commitment to the advancement of sport participation and excellence in Canada. Her influence extends throughout the sport system, a result of her decades of involvement as an athlete, coach, team leader, board member, consultant, educator and more.  Marty has served in numerous capacities in badminton including president of Badminton Canada and team leader at numerous major games. Of note, Marty is currently a Director on the Canadian Olympic Committee, Commonwealth Games Canada, and Chair of the 2018 World Junior Championships to be hosted in Markham ON.

“Marty’s appointment to the Senate is an outstanding recognition of her contributions to her community, our sport and to Canada” said Anil Kaul, President of Badminton Canada. “I am thrilled that the Canadian sport system has another champion in the Canadian Senate.
